BIOGRAPHY

Andrei Hâncu is a Moldovan artist born in Pyatigorsk, Russia in 1988. First educated at the Academic Lyceum of Fine Arts “Igor Vieru” in Chișinău, Rep. of Moldova, from 2000 to 2008, he later studied graphics at the State University “Ion Creangă” in Chișinău, where he graduated in 2012. In 2015 he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in the class of Peter Kogler, graduating in 2022.

Andrei Hâncu’s work is based on the physical recreation of digital images he finds on the internet, be it stock images, cartoon stills or public domain cliparts. His challenge is to create for himself an artistic identity, filtering and choosing with his own criteria the variety and massiveness of available imagery on any subject. He then sends digital files with the information on the material, size, thickness, etc, to companies with highly specialized printing gear online. Andrei Hâncu himself later edits and refines some of the works in his studio.
