BIOGRAPHY
Edo Murtić (1921 – 2005) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb with Professor Ljubo Babić. Later, he moved to Belgrade to attend Petar Dobrović’s Art School.
During World War II, he became involved as a partisan in anti-fascist resistance. During this time, he created numerous drawings with both high documentary and artistic value.
Between 1951 and 1952, Murtić travelled to the USA where he met Jackson Pollock, De Kooning, Richard Diebenkorn, James Brooks, and other American artists. During that period, he created the cycle “Experience of America.”
In 1958, he participated in the XXIX Venice Biennale and Documenta in Kassel.
In 1960, Murtić received the Marzotto Award and Gold Medal of the Italian President at the Premio di Pittura Città di Faenza.
The artist participated in 1965 at the 7th Tokyo Biennale, and in 1967 at the IX São Paulo Biennale.
In 1972, Edo Murtić received the Silver Plaque from Pope John VI in Rome. He also received the Premio Internazionale di Grafica Do Forni and the Mayor’s Medal in Venice.
The French Ministry of Culture awarded him the title Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
“The energetic gesture, powerful colourism, and general vitality of the cycle ‘Experience of America’ announced an aesthetic paradigm that Murtić would further develop during the 1960s into monumental abstract compositions in his trademark idiom. In the 1950s, his style was closer to art informel and tachisme, the European variants of Abstract Expressionism. It was precisely this type of painting, rich in pictorial dynamism, which brought him his first success abroad and established him as an internationally relevant artist.” – Branko Franceschi
