BIOGRAPHY

Maria Bordeanu was born in 1982 in Bucharest, Romania. In 2001, she graduated from the “Nicolae Tonitza” Art High School in Bucharest. She pursued her studies at the National University of Arts in Bucharest and graduated from the Painting Department in 2005. In 2007, she earned her Master’s Degree in Fine Arts in Painting from the same university.
She has been represented by 418 Gallery (Cetate/Munich) since 2011. Maria currently resides and works in Stockholm.

“My work displays a strong preference for realistic imagery inspired by nature, personal photographs, movie frames. I always consider the painted result while I document a scene, it is like the process of reconstructing a memory and has a revealing character. I prefer oil on canvas for the sheer pleasure of working with it in successive layers, it has the best tactility for a great variety of subjects.
A large part of my practice is related to painting, and recent projects are inspired by mirrors and reflections. Lately, I’ve been delving further into the world of drawing, exploring water and the unique compositions it creates. Water is an element in continuous movement, like a reflection in a mirror, and its fluidity inspires each of us differently. It also complements a new mode of artistic expression, such as using pencil or pastel on paper. Moving waves are ephemeral points, and through these compositions I wanted to preserve a fragment of time, in a unique moment of the day.

The Swedish scenery and Stockholm have been significant sources of inspiration for me in creating artworks connected to nature. Here, one can feel a closer connection to nature, with water being a prominent feature of the landscape. This dynamic relationship between people and natural elements is a theme I’m currently exploring in my paintings.

Water serves as a reflective mirror and forms a backdrop for the scenery. A pathway consistently follows the waterfront, allowing people to experience it both from a distance and up close. The distinct seasonal changes play a substantial role in influencing people’s reactions to the environment, with the interplay of light being particularly noteworthy.
This brings me to my current project, where I’m concentrating on exploring reflections and interpreting everyday life and landscapes with minimal human presence. This urban-nature reflection captivates me, particularly the fluidity of water, transforming my work into canvases comprised solely of water shapes.” – Statement by the artist

In 2006, she was awarded the first prize at the Young Artists – Gala PRIMAVERA 2006 in Bucharest.
Since 2011, Maria Bordeanu’s works have been a part of the Art in Embassies Collection, U.S. Department of State.
