Roman Cotosman (1935 – 2006) started his artistic journey in the 1960s in Timisoara. In 1962 he stopped working figuratively and started to explore for a short period the Informel before dedicating himself to constructivist art.
In 1968, he achieved his first kinetic work, Quaternar I, at Fabrica Dermatina, in Timisoara. The artwork was developed for the Biennial Exhibition of Constructivist Art in Nürnberg, Germany which took place the following year.
Cotosman is a founding member of the kinetic-constructivist group, 1.1.1. (1966-1969) which he founded with Ștefan Bertalan and Constantin Flondor in Timișoara.
In 1968, Roman Cotosman participated at the first abstract-constructivist exhibition in Romania, “5 artists from Timisoara.”, at Kalinderu Gallery in Bucharest together with Stefan Bertalan, Constantin Flondor, Zoltan Molnar and Diet Sayler.
Cotosman represented his country at the 1969 Biennial Exhibition of Constructivist Art in Nürnberg, Germany.
In 1970, he moved to the United States and firstly settled in New York and in 1972, he moved to Philadelphia, where he would spend the rest of his life.
In the United States, Roman Cotosman continued to work conscientiously and relentlessly creating an extensive array of minimalistic drawings, collages and objects.
After 1989, Roman Cotosman started exhibiting in Romania again. 1995 marks Cotosman’s participation at the Venice Biennale, at the Romanian Pavillon.
He passed away in Philadelphia in 2006.
